CAPTAIN GERHARD LOURENS
Gerhard flew C-185 aircraft before joining the South African Air Force Aerobatic Team.
AGE – 28
EDUCATION – Attended the Afrikaanse Hoer Seunskool in Pretoria where he matriculated in 2001 .
CAREER – Joined the South African Air Force in May 2002. After flying training, Gerhard was transferred to 44 Squadron in Pretoria where he flew C-185s and qualified as an Operational Commander. After qualifying as a flight instructor in 2007, Gerhard was initially selected as Ground Liaison Officer for Team 68 and 69. In January 2009, he flew his first display for Team 70 in the number four position and has flown 65 Official displays to date.
BACKGROUND – Unmarried, but in a relationship with Nicolene van Aarde. In his spare time, Gerhard enjoys music, reading, astronomy , playing guitar, running and swimming.
GOOD TO KNOW – Gerhard is a keen Falconer and frequently collects and rehabilitates injured birds of prey on the West Coast.
CAREER HIGHLIGHTS – Operational flying in the Cessna 185, being selected for the Silver Falcons and the huge honour of representing the SA Air Force in this capacity for three years.
AIRCRAFT FLOWN – Pilatus PC-7, PC-7 Mkll, C-185, Yak 52 and RV-8.
DID YOU KNOW? Gerhard is the founder of the increasingly popular “Langebaan Lagoon Crossing”, an annual event in which participants can either swim or kayak 4.2 km across the Langebaan Lagoon from Shark Bay to Preekstoel at Kraalbaai in the West Coast National Park.
